Capacity Building Programme

The Capacity Building Programme is a specialised teacher training programme conducted as a part of B.Ed. curriculum of Kerala University to equip student teachers to face the challenges of classroom situation in a multicultural society and also uplift the quality of teacher education in par with the global standards. . Capacity Building Programme was conducted by Government College of Teacher Education from 10th to 12th May as a three-day training programme for Next generation teachers. The programme was carried out in online platform through Google meet from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm all the three days. The initiative was coordinated by Smt. Asha Krishnan and Shri. Sreenath U, Assistant professors, Government College of Teacher Education. The speakers of the programme were Dr. V Rajasenan Nair (Social Psychologist & former DD, NYKS, Government of India), Ms. Geethakumari S (Principal, PSNPM, Government HSS Peroorkada), Dr.PramodDinakar (Assistant Professor, Department of Education, ChinmayaVishwavidhyapeetham, Ernakulam) & Dr. MadhubalaJayachandran (Principal, B.Ed. Training College, Hindi pracharasabha& Former Principal B.Ed. Training College, Karyavattom) Miss Krishna M S, 1st year B.Ed., carried out the anchoring of the function with along with active participation of all the 1st year student teachers of the institution. 
DAY – 1 
The function started with the prayer by Darshana V.S of 1st year B.Ed. The welcome speech was done Dr. Issac Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce followed introduction of the programme by Smt. Asha Krishnan. The capacity building programme was inaugurated by Dr. K Rajeshwari, the Principle of this prestigious institution and delivered Presidential Address. The topic of the first day was ‘Self Awareness and Entrepreneurship’. The Introduction was given by Dr. V Rajasenan Nair and Presented by Ms. Geethakumari S. Rajasenan sir gave a brief but effective introduction to the importance of Self Awareness of teachers while dealing with classroom that is the miniature model of society and various life skill he/she should possess to communicate and control his pupil coming from different socio-cultural backgrounds. He also gave a model of process of capacity development & skill development and the influence of Heredity, Health and Environment in it. The acquisition of life skill leads to an overall development of the personality and leadership quality building. It was followed by the Topic Presentation. Self-Awareness is a probe into one’s own self in relation to the surroundings in which one lives. The Self Concept includes assessment of self-esteem, body image, role performance and personal identity. The session became quite interesting with application Johari Window which deals several personality traits of ours known or unknown by ourselves and others. This unique concept was well received by the students through active interaction on applying their personality traits in the Johari window and suggestion by teacher to how to modify its pattern in our life by our own effort. The session was quite a treat for all the participants as Johari window was followed by a much more effective and important topic of SWOT analysis. It is our self-analysis of our strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats along with ways to deal with all our limitations. The session entered into the commercial aspect of teacher in the form of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is the activity of setting up a business or businesses taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. In the ended students were tasked with an assignment on the topic ‘Self Awareness as a key to entrepreneurship’. The first day also included two video presentation which makes us realize about the importance of self-awareness and entrepreneurship in a teacher’s life. The vote of thanks was given by the programme coordinator Shri. Sreenath sir. 
DAY – 2 
the second day of our capacity building programme started off with the prayer by sister smitha joseph, 1st year b.ed. student. krishna s jayan from the department of english welcomed all the resource persons and participants. the topic of the day was ‘negotiating skills and community resource mobilization’. the topic was presented by dr. pramoddinakar after the topic introduction by dr. v rajasenan sir. negotiation involves two or more people finding an acceptable solution to a shared problem. the session started with a bang by an active interaction with students by pramod sir through a question answer session. the negotiation skill include decision making, problem solving, effective communication, interpersonal relationships, coping with emotions etc. the session provided information on the role of decision making by teachers in a classroom. decision making is our ability to choose the best alternative solution to a problem from the alternative options, with due consideration of the consequences of different decisions. sir has delivered an effective presentation on problem solving ability of a teacher as it is the art of finding the ways to get from where you are now to where you want be and it help us to deal with problems in a constructive manner. the concept was presented with help of a problem solving wheel. the session also included the importance of effective communication in life and building interpersonal relationship and concluded by community resource mobilization & its significance from the perspective of a teacher. the session ended with provision of an assignment on identifying an area/aspect in our life that we had made a decision and assess its consequences. the vote of thank for pramod sir was given by mrs. lini suri from the department of malayalam. 
DAY – 3 
The 3rd& final day of the capacity building programme started with prayer by Sister Sajinithekkekaduppil from the department of English. Nandakripa, 1st year B.Ed. student from Department of Malayalam welcomed the resource person of the day. The final day’s topic was ‘Thinking Skills and Innovation’. The topic was presented by Dr. MadhubalaJayachandran after brief introduction of the topic by Dr. V Rajasenan sir. The session started off with stress on Thoughts, Words, Actions & Habits in the character building of a person. The class carried on with exposure to vast subject of Thinking skills, its types and significance in day to day life. The different types of thinking skills include analytical, concrete, abstract, divergent, convergent, creative, Holistic, sequential & most importantly critical thinking. Madhubala madam highlighted the role of each of these skills in a classroom situation. The session proceeded with emphasizing how important a teacher to be critical thinker as a critical thinker has self-awareness, empathy, good communication skill, emotional control and decision making & problem solving ability. The presentation went quite nicely with interested concepts one after another like WATCH, PNI and active interaction with students. The speaker also mentioned the creative thinking ability, its role and scope &how IQ level is related to the creative thinking ability of a person. Creative thinking smoothly changed to Innovation as it was the most significant part which stressed on why Innovation is a basic necessity in this 21st century educational system. The session was concluded with the provision of assignment on topic ‘Innovative ideas are the need of the hour for making online teaching learning more effective (based on thinking skills)’. Vote of thanks for such a wonderful presentation by Madhubala mam was given by Basheer U, 1st year B.Ed. student from Department of commerce followed by a feedback session.
